In an effort to bolster their starting rotation, the Yankees re-signed veteran left-handed pitcher J. A. Happ to a reported two-year, $34 million contract with a $17-million vesting option for a third season in 2021. The 36-year-old was acquired by New York from the Toronto Blue Jays this past July, after which he posted a win-loss record of 7-0 to go along with a 2.69 earned run average. He proved particularly effective against the rival Boston Red Sox, as he registered a 1.99 ERA against the team during four starts last season.

Originally selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round of the 2004 MLB Amateur Draft, Happ made his MLB debut in 2007 and has since played for six different teams, including the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates. He boasts a career record of 109-82 to go along with an ERA of 3.90 and 1,357 strikeouts. He is expected to round out the Yankees' five-man rotation that also consists of Luis Severino, CC Sabathia, James Paxton, and Masahiro Tanaka.
