The 2018 NBA Draft was held June 21, and the Knicks, after registering a win-loss record of 29-51 during the 2017-18 regular season, held the ninth overall pick. With several intriguing options still on the board, the Knicks opted for Kentucky freshman Kevin Knox.

A 6-foot-9-inch, 215-pound small forward from Tampa, Florida, Knox averaged 15.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in 37 contests last season. Despite his reputation as a capable scorer, Knox was greeted with a chorus of boos from Knicks fans at the draft. He has since sought advice from fellow Knick Kristaps Porzingis, who dealt with the same reaction when he was selected in the 2015 NBA Draft.
