Having failed to make the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season, the Knicks have decided to implement drastic changes. Knicks president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry released a statement announcing the firing of head coach Jeff Hornacek on April 12, the morning after the team lost its final game of the season. With this loss, the Knicks finished the season with a win-loss record of 29-53, making their total record under Hornacek, who also coached the team last year, 60-104. Kurt Rambis, the team’s associate head coach, was also dismissed.
The Knicks have had 11 head coaches, including Hornacek, since the 2001-02 season. Plagued by a lack of stability, the team has only made the playoffs in three of the past 14 years and has achieved only one series victory over the past 18 years. Moreover, the Knicks have lost at least 50 games in each of the past four seasons.
